5 Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy
Very few people realize it, but it can actually be very expensive to undergo dental procedures. And yet a lot of us still put oral hygiene on the backburner, opting instead to favor skincare or working out.
It’s crucial, however, to take care of your teeth to keep them as healthy as possible and prevent problems in the long run.
Brush your teeth
This is the most obvious solution to dental hygiene, and yet it’s also commonly forgotten or overlooked. Everybody knows that brushing should be done twice a day, but it’s important to also know when. Reserve one of those brushes before you go to bed; this helps eliminate any buildup and germs that may have collected throughout the day.
When brushing your teeth, use a toothpaste rich in fluoride and brush your teeth in gentle, circular motions to help dislodge any plaque that can cause dental problems like gingivitis or periodontitis, which are both caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and gums.
Brushing can remove a lot of the bacteria and plaque that settles on the teeth and gums, but there are some things that cannot be removed through brushing alone. Flossing helps by removing the food particles and plaque that are lodged between the teeth. When included in your regular dental care, flossing also helps promote gum health.
Use a Waterpik
Most individuals with braces may find it difficult and even painful to use floss, even with the help of an orthodontic floss threader. Although floss is sold in precut versions called dental picks that can help with keeping buildup at a minimum for braces, using a Waterpik can make the process easier and painless.
Waterpiks help remove food particles, plaque buildup, and bacteria on your teeth and gum line using pressurized streams of pulsating water to irrigate and dislodge the spaces in between teeth and gums. Some advanced models of Waterpiks even have temperature control settings to help reduce bad breath and eliminate other heat-resistant bacteria.
Clean your tongue
There is a common misconception that in order to prevent bad breath, you have to keep your teeth clean. But the majority of bad breath-causing bacteria is actually located on the tongue and the inside of the cheeks.
Making it a habit to clean your tongue can greatly reduce bad breath. Use a tongue cleaner to clean your tongue, and make sure to work your way from the back to the front of the tongue when cleaning.
Rinsing your mouth with mouthwash also helps with not just killing the bacteria on the tongue, but also the bacteria on the gum line, teeth, and the inside of your cheek.
Visit a dentist regularly
Although most of the preventive measures listed above can be done on your own, it’s also important to schedule regular checkups and cleaning sessions with a dentist. Dentists are better equipped and are more knowledgeable when it comes to your oral health. They might be able to spot the symptoms of potential tooth decay and deal with it while it does not yet pose any serious issue.
