Step 1 – Use A Makeup Wipe To Remove Any Remnants Of Makeup

This gives you a fresh canvas to begin your work on and avoids any slippage or smudges of the work you are about to do. Avoid rubbing or dragging your skin as you clean your eye makeup away, and instead move carefully, using a fresh wipe for each eye.

Step 2 – Apply Eye Shadow Primer

Eyeshadow primer helps your makeup stay in place and helps avoid eyeshadows from creating lines or creases. Those with dry skin may be better suited to a cream product, however powders are available if you are prone to more oil build up on your skin.

Check out this video on how to correctly apply eyeshadow primer, however as a general rule, you can either use a small brush or your fingertips to apply the product to the skin. Avoid going too close to the actual eye waterline, as you may irritate.

Step 3 – Line Your Eyes Initially

This is different from actual eyeliner application and basically helps to bring out the depth of your eyes and help them to appear deeper set into your skin than they really are.

This video will give you a little more information on how to apply a thin layer of eyeliner at this stage. It’s important to point out that you shouldn’t go over the top at this stage.

Always go for waterproof eyeliner, as this avoids any smudges if your eyes water occasionally. Slowly and carefully line the inner upper and lower lids using a dark shade, so either dark brown, dark blue, or preferably black. Avoid any colors which are too bright, especially white – white eyeliner pencils only make your eyes look larger, by opening them up.

Step 4 – Carefully Apply Eyeshadows

The type of eyeshadows you use, as well as how you apply them, will make or break your endeavors here, so you do have to be careful. Initially, you need to choose a dark colored eyeshadow and apply it to the outer edges of the eyelid, before gently blending it gradually towards the center of your eyelid.

Avoid any shimmery colors, as these reflect the light and actually make your eyes appear bigger. A lighted makeup mirror will certainly help you here, as well as a good quality eyeshadow palette, giving you different shades for day and night looks.

When choosing the color, basically the darker the shade, the smaller it will make your eye appear, as less light will be reflected back, so avoid anything which is lighter than a navy blue shade.

Step 5 – Winged Eyeliner Can Help

Applying winged eyeliner isn’t the easiest of tasks, especially if you are not used to it, but with a little practice, it can be done!

Check out this video for a little help on the subject. You don’t have to follow this step, but it certainly does help make your eyes look less ‘open’ and therefore smaller as a result.

Find a liquid eyeliner pen for the best precision results, however you can also use an eyeliner brush and liquid liner too. The key is to not ‘wing it’ too far out, only extending at most around one-quarter of an inch – any further than that and you risk not only comedy makeup, but also creating an elongated eye shape.

Step 6 – Curl Those Lashes

You don’t have to use a heated eyelash curler for this, as a standard eyelash curler will work just as well if you know how to use it – again, check out this video for a little visual help.

You should hold your lashes in the curler for around 15 seconds for a serious curling boost – no more is needed. This helps make your eyes look smaller because by curling the lash, you are helping to cut down on the appearance of the lid height, whilst also giving you a more glamorous look overall!

Step 7 – Apply Mascara Sparingly

This particular step can be tricky, because many of us don’t like to go without mascara, which generally does make your eyes look bigger; having said that, if you only apply it to the bottom lashes and don’t go too over the top with the amount, you can create a smaller eye look, without having to forgo completely, losing your safety net!

Mascara will, however, help keep the curl of your eyelashes in place, so the key here is that less is certainly more.

Conclusion

This ‘how to’ guide will help you create a smaller eyed appearance when you look in the mirror, and for everyone who is looking at you too.

Of course, we should always love what we have, and if you have big eyes then you may find that people with naturally small eyes are very envious of you!

If you have always struggled with the size of your eyes however, then the good news is that makeup tricks and hints can help you create a smaller eyed look quite easily, provided you practice the techniques and get them right.
