IPL Laser Machines – Optimising Permanent Hair Removal Treatments

IPL Laser machines for the beauty care sector have been commercially available from the 1990s. Since then, the industry has seen exponential growth in world-class beauty treatments.

Consider the scenario before that. Doing away with unwanted hair meant the regular use of tweezers, epilators or razors. Today, it is a permanent process on an IPL hair removal machine. Skin rejuvenation treatments and removing fine lines and wrinkles were treatments that required surgical intervention, followed by downtime and long recuperation periods. Now, a few sessions on an IPL machine, each taking less than half an hour is enough. Even tattoos can now be removed on state of the art Q-switched laser machines.

The Principle Behind IPL Laser Hair Removal

Laser IPL machines damage the hair from the roots and the reason why the process is considered to be permanent. Light beams emitting from a laser IPL machine enter the surface of the skin and are absorbed by melanin that is situated at the root of every hair. Melanin is the pigment that gives hair its colour. This light energy is transformed into heat energy, destroying melanin along with the hair follicle.

However, light beams can only destroy growing hair and not the dormant ones. There is, therefore, a possibility of the dormant hairs in the area under treatment growing back after the active ones are destroyed. For this reason, a number of sessions are required to take care of the full growth cycle for total and permanent hair removal.

The Difference in IPL and Laser Technologies

While people tend to club lasers and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) technologies and term the devices as IPL laser machine for permanent hair removal, there is, in reality, some differences between the two.

Laser hair removal machines emit precise and narrow beams of light of a specific wavelength. Hence, it targets the hair follicles accurately below the skin without any effect on the surrounding areas. The wavelengths can be adjusted to treat all colours of hair, from the dark to light to blonde. Further, light pulses are generated in fractions of a second, making it a quick treatment process and suitable for hair removal from large areas.

IPL machines, on the other hand, emit a broad spectrum of light of varying wavelengths, and the beams are not focussed and concentrated. It is similar to a light from an incandescent bulb. Not all wavelengths penetrate the surface of the skin and reach the hair follicles. A lot of beams fall on the surrounding skin too and hence, IPL is not suitable for patients with dark skin and light hair as they are more susceptible to burns. The plus point is that treatments on IPL machines are affordable and lower than that on laser operated devices.

Hair removal processes on both machines are typically done in 5 to 6 sessions though it can vary from person to person depending on the extent of the treatment area.

The Ideal Candidate For Laser IPL Hair Removal

Both laser and IPL works best on candidates with dark hair on light skin. This is because the darker the melanin pigment the faster and more effective will be the light absorption leading to destroying of the hair follicle. Dark skin types have to be treated with laser-run machines where specific beams of light enter the skin and unlike IPL do not cover the surrounding area.

Models of Laser IPL Machines

IPL and laser machines are available in various models and versions. Salon and beauty clinic owners can first install a small desktop model that is lower priced than the standard floor models but not short on power or performance. The transition to more powerful machines can be made to service more clients once business picks-up,. The full range of laser IPL machines is available with Universal IPL, a leading importer and distributor of world class machines in Australia.
